Getting to Know Us

We thought it might be nice for you to get a deeper insight into our world here at Max Shutler Plumbing & Heating. We absolutely love what we do and always strive for the best. Below is a short Q and A with Max, our director. We hope you enjoy reading and getting to know us a little bit better!

1. What made you want to go into heating and plumbing?

I’ve always been more hands on then academic as such, my dad is in the building trade and I used to love working with him at weekends and school holidays. I watched a plumber working when I was about 11 and was transfixed! I guess that’s what started it! From then I went through the motions of work experience, weekend work and all that I could do, and when I left school went down the apprenticeship route, 4 years at college, then self-employment at 20. The rest as they say is history!

2. What made you decide to go into business for yourself?

When I finished my apprenticeship, I was talking to my old boss and didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. He said, “Why don’t you go self-employed and sub contract for me and pick up some of your own jobs too?” It snowballed from there! It goes back to wanting to have my own name on the side of a van too, like dad always used to!

3. Where would you like the business to be in the next 5 years?

It sounds cliché but I never thought I’d be here and for that I am very grateful! By the same spin of the coin, hard work always paves the way for the rewards in life I suppose! So where would I like to see the business going in the next 5 years? I’d like to be more established as a brand and business, I’d like to take on an apprentice to pass on my craft and knowledge because someone did that for me so it’s only fair. Otherwise I would love to be able to continue to do what I love.

4. What is the most challenging job you’ve had to do?

There was a listed building I was working on as part of a full refurbishment. It had no void between the downstairs ceiling and upstairs floor like you would normally find in a house, so I had to re plumb the place where it couldn’t be seen, in very unusual circumstances! That was an overly challenging job but the end result was well worth the toil! Otherwise, anything new that I haven’t come across before is a bit of a challenge but I love those sorts of jobs because it takes you back out of your comfort zone, and makes you have to really think about what you are doing rather than it becoming second nature after all these years!

5. What is your favourite part of the work you do?

The boilers and central heating sector! We did a lot of that at college and during my apprenticeship, so I’ve got a soft spot for boilers, central heating breakdowns, or system refurbishments. it’s a good result always getting the clients home or hot water going again either after a breakdown or as part of a refurb for optimum efficiency.

We hope this has given you a little more insight into what we’re all about at Max Shutler Plumbing & Heating, and how we’ve come to be! As always, if there’s anything we can assist you with, please feel free to get in touch with us! We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have!
